A world before Course Management Systems? That sounds like a nice place.
Great video – I really enjoyed watching this and I love the mix of still and motion footage. Well done.
So, I’d like to ask your expert opinion (and I will admit I feel very fortunate having someone with your expertise in this class). Do we need an online forum in this class? Is the communication too distributed (via blogs)? What do you think?
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for posting this video. I really enjoyed it. I honestly have no idea where to start making my video! What programs did you use? How did you put together videos and pictures? Wow. Thank you for posting!
Jamie
@Alec I think that blogs were intended for call-and-response (i.e. post-and-reply). Although I am aware of many people effectively using blogs for conversation, my feeling has always been that a blog is like that person’s open house, and when you comment you are dropping by their place. The “control” is always in the hands of the person controlling the blog.
Similarly, Elluminate has that “come over to my place” feel, so even synchronous sessions don’t seem to mitigate that unless there is no moderator and it’s all open chat, since you can’t have too many simultaneous mics/webcams. And if it’s open chat, why bother with Elluminate?
Right now, it seems the only way to have the most open conversation possible (if that’s your goal) is through either an open chat room (synchronous) or an open discussion forum (asynchronous). There need be no moderator, only the person who sets up the space. Then the question becomes, would the forum be truly open to all, or closed and end with the course? That is up to you, and as you know will affect the entire conversation.
Re: CMS — it certainly felt like the summer of love before Bb — so much freedom, so many possibilities….
@Jamie — thanks! I used iMovie to make the video. The trick was to decide where I wanted the stills or clips to “interrupt” me, splitting the video at the two points, and extracting the audio and deleting the video of me talking. Then I had to make sure that the still or clip was timed exactly in that space. I got better at it as I went along!
