Grading: As Good as It Gets

Most likely, the way I’m grading in Moodle is as good as it gets.

Every other week, two of my classes takes a quiz online. Each quiz has 70% objective and 30% essay questions, plus a 10% essay for additional credit. That’s four essays per test.

Moodle lets me see all the answers to the same question on one scrollable screen, using its Manual Grading feature. I can scan them all, then grade each, assigning points and comments all on that one screen.

I also open another tab with the same class, add a new resource (web page) to that week, call it “Quiz x Results” and copy and paste sample good answers into that file as I grade.

When I’m done, I edit the quiz by checking boxes to now show feedback and answers (I’d had them hidden till I finish grading all the tests). Then I go into Grades and move the quiz to the “graded” category so the totals update. Then I add a Latest News item (automatically emailed to students) saying I’m done and they can now see their grades and comments, plus the Results for sample good answers.

I don’t enjoy grading any more than I used to, but I’m thinking this is as good as it gets!
