I think it's not only important for our students to learn, but learn things they don't enjoy. Truth is, life requires us to do a lot of important things we many not enjoy. I think, as with most things, balance is crucial. We can't swing from one extreme to another; it's bad for our students and society. If 21st century teaching is about skills, there are a number of skills, from academia past, that are still important, as you mention, sustained argument and scholarly rigor are only a few. I would hate to see that diminish. This is a great post that I deeply enjoyed reading. Thanks for your insightful work! Lisa, I think you raise some really valid points. I've been exploring your blog today, and was intrigued by the 21st Century Education series you posted a few months ago. The fact that it is sponsored by Nokia and Pearson sparked a whole line of thought about the commercial connections to some of this, which I hadn't thought of before. I really appreciate your putting a lot of my ideas into some kind of framework -- I've been wondering where I'm headed with all this for some time, having started out as a techno-utopian and remaining a heavy user and creator. I am aware that the historian in me has been balking for the last couple of years about some of the assumptions. Not sure what you mean by paper version? of my whole blog? or this post? Thanks, Rod. I was talking to a friend yesterday about the challenges of the impending technology review in our school district. He said his Dad has a sign on his desk that says something like, "I am not afraid of new ideas. It's the old ones I'm afraid of." You have challenged your readers to look at technology and ask what ideas we are throwing out with the bath-water, as it were, when we implement new technologies and ways of learning. What are we forgetting to teach? What valuable lessons, history lessons maybe, are we ignoring because that type of learning may be too difficult? As educators, we need to stop, look, listen, and think. Thanks for putting on the brakes and keep up the great blogging (do you have a paper version of this?)! Very thoughtful and provocative.
