{"id":42,"date":"2007-06-27T06:16:20","date_gmt":"2007-06-27T06:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lisahistory.net\/wordpress\/?p=42"},"modified":"2007-06-27T06:16:20","modified_gmt":"2007-06-27T06:16:20","slug":"upon-arrival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lisahistory.net\/wordpress\/2007\/06\/upon-arrival\/","title":{"rendered":"Upon arrival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"6\" hspace=\"12\" align=\"left\" alt=\"edmedia.jpg\" id=\"image41\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lisahistory.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/06\/edmedia.thumbnail.jpg?w=648&#038;ssl=1\" \/>  I have arrived at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lisahistory.net\/wordpress\/www.aace.org\/CONF\/EDMEDIA\/\">Ed-Media conference<\/a>, but I was still listening to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umanitoba.ca\/learning_technologies\/conferences\/foe\/schedule.php\">Future of Education<\/a> podcasts on the plane and it occurred to me that this is a very big field. Even prior to this huge conference, I have attended sessions, read blogs, written posts and listened to podcasts on subjects as diverse as college education, web 2.0, learning management systems, student habits, and technical administration. And really, I am just a college history instructor who loves teaching online. The blogs I read are written by a wide variety of people, as wide an assortment as those I will access at this conference. And each seems to have a different focus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instructional designers ask: how can we do this? what can we build?<\/li>\n<li>Practicing teachers ask: how should we do this to enable learning?<\/li>\n<li>Educational entrepreneurs ask: how can I make money off my ideas?<\/li>\n<li>Educational adminstrators ask: how much will this cost and how easily is it implemented?<\/li>\n<li>Scholars and doctoral students ask: what does the research show? how can I make a career in this field?<\/li>\n<li>Innovators ask: what would be both cool and really useful?<\/li>\n<li>Instructional leaders ask: how can this help teachers help students?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can all these different perspectives add up to new knowledge? Some of these approaches rely on formal learning, and some do not. Some depend on professional connections or publication. The Ed-Media abstracts number in the hundreds, yet there appears to be no blog, wiki or social forums associated with the conference, unlike the two I&#8217;ve just attended, and I&#8217;ve gotten to the point where I find this odd.
